Fresh flavourful delights

Fish, coconuts and starches are the basis of local cuisine. Here is an example of a typical breakfast you could be enjoying there.

Mas huni

  • 1 can light meat tuna chunks
  • 1 tsp. dry or fresh chili
  • 4-5 curry leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 cup onion, finely sliced
  • 1 tsp. black pepper powder
  • Salt
  • 1 tbsp. fresh grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp. lime juice

Home is where the coral is

The Maldives consist of 1,192 coral islands, so Maldivians used coral for a lot of things, famously for building their houses. Because coral reefs are today protected, this tradition is now lost but there are plenty of houses that still bear witness to this local practice.

Little big capital

Male might be the country’s largest city, but it holds the record for the smallest capital in the world.

Cabinet meeting? Underwater, please

To highlight the need for climate change action, the government of the Maldives held a cabinet meeting on the sea bed.

One of a kind coral mosque

Built from coral and famous for intricately carved interior, Hukuru Miskiiy is also the oldest mosque in the country. Its cemetery’s tombstones are equally unique - rounded stones mark the graves of females, pointy ones mark those of males and stones with gold-plated lettering represent the graves of former sultans.
